SOLOM chart |
When analyzing the student’s SOLOM, there are many areas where the student is excelling. Student M.’s comprehension is very developed. He is able to understand almost everything at a normal pace, but there are times that the student needs questions repeated and/or reworded. When looking at the student’s fluency, he is very fluent in his everyday conversation (BISC), but he still needs more time with the CALP. If fluency on the SOLOM were broken down between BISC and CALP, this student would have score lower in the CALP, but his BISC is proficient. He also does very well with his vocabulary. There are times where he may use an inappropriate term and/or rephrase ideas, but for the most part his vocabulary is on target. This student has a much harder time when it comes to his pronunciation and grammar.
He still is having problems with his pronunciation and at times, it was difficult to follow what he was saying. In addition, he makes errors frequently in grammar and word order which leads to unclear meanings in his writing. This was one reason why we believed that focusing on his grammar was important as well as his comprehension of academics.
